Dr. Wei obtained his BS in Engineering, from Fudan University, Shanghai, in 1991. His specialization was in the area of plasma electronics. He got his MS in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 1994. His masters thesis was on Optical Object Identification based on Associative Memory. This work won the excellent thesis award at Tsinghua University in 1994. Upon graduation, he joined the Faculty at Tsinghua University, teaching Optoelectronics and performing research and development on new lasers, as well as computer controlled laser systems, such as laser drivers and laser heating systems. In addition, he had done considerable work in software development, including Windows GUI and low level assembly programming. From Aug. 1996 to Jan. 2000, he successfully pursued and completed his PhD in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. His research has been non-intrusive diagnostics of materials, including biological tissues, using ultrasonic signals generated by laser pulses. His main contributions include: introducing modern digital signal processing techniques such as the wavelet transform method to process optoacoustic signals; developing a novel spectral ratio technique to conveniently measure the optical absorption coefficients; and, modeling the optoacoustic signals obtained non-intrusively by optical sensing as well as by conventional piezoelectric means. Dr. Wei completed his PhD program in just over three years with a grade point average 4.0, the maximum possible. Simultaneously, he worked as a teaching assistant at the department. His duties included: administrating the department's computer LAN and desktops (NT); teaching LabVIEW student labs; and, developing a course website; Dr. Zibiao Wei has authored and co-authored more than 15 journal and conference papers since 1992. His research experience has allowed him to develop unique skills related to experimentation, as well as the requisite analytical techniques. His specialties are in three categories:
